Last Saturday, the rowing taster sessions were held for the enthusiastic novice rowers of Hughes Hall.

Firstly they had a technical erg session to get to grips with the basic movements in rowing followed by a water outing in an Eight boat! With careful planning from the hard working captains and seniors that rowed and coxed for the novices, we managed to do 10 water outings in a day using two of our novice boats! Huge shoutout too for the keen novices that helped us out by doing more than one outing.

The rainy weather did not dampen the spirits of the novice rowers neither did it stopped us from having a BBQ in college at the end of the day to celebrate the start of the rowing term. Well done to the committee for pulling this off and we hope to see more of the novices around this term! 🙂 #GoHughes

We are very proud that four Hughesians have just competed at the 2017 World Rowing Championships last weekend in Sarasota, Florida.

Hughes Hall was well represented in the Great Britain crew for the Men’s Eight (M8+). Lance Tredell raced in stroke and Olympic Gold Medallist Tom Ransley in Seat 5. After placing third in their repechage behind Netherlands and Romania, the British crew went on to dominate the B final yesterday.

Two Hughesians also competed in the World Rowing Championships for the United States.

 

Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida will be the host of the 2017 World Rowing Championships from the 24th of September till the 1st of October.

The respective national teams have been announced and this year we see four former Hughes Hall students competing, two men in the Great Britain National Team and two men in the US National Team.

Lance Tredell who was also the 2017 president of the Cambridge University Boat Club will be the stroke for the GB Men’s Eight, rowing alongside fellow Olympic Gold Medallist and former Cambridge Blue, Tom Ransley. The USRowing have selected Patrick Eble for the US Men’s Eight and Ben Ruble for the US Men’s Four, who were both in the 2017 Cambridge Blue Boat crew.

It is an exciting year to see so many former members of the boat club and the college, rowing at such a prestigious stage, proudly representing their countries.

Despite it not being term time, Hughes Hall boat club has been busy for the past month or so with our own Summer Rowing Program. We’ve invited any students/staff who might be interested in learning how to row as a novice and also kept up a senior rowing program in a Four.

On the 26th of August, Hughes Hall competed in the Coxed Four event in the Cambridge Regatta 2017 hosted by the Cantabrigian Rowing Club. After the initial time trial race in the morning, they were placed in the Final B category to go up against a City boat, side-by-side.

 

On the 2nd of July, three rowers from Hughes Hall competed in the finals at the Henley Royal Regatta.

Lance Tredell stroked an eight with fellow Leander Club and Newcastle University rowers against a German crew for The Grand Challenge Cup to only loose out by a length at the finish line.

Racing for the Visitors’ Challenge Cup Final, Patrick Eble and Ben Ruble, alongside two other Cambridge University rowers went up against a four from Leander Club. They put up a great fight throughout the race but Leander Club edged them out just by 3/4 of a length.

W3 kicked off the final day with a strong showing against Christ’s W3, catching them early out of the gate and handing them spoons! A wild ride this week saw them finish up 3 spots.

M2 was up next, looking to take Caius M3’s blades away from them. By the time they got to Grassy, it was an eerily similar situation to Lents with boats pulled in around the corner and a crew jackknifed on the far side. However, M2 maneuvered deftly through closely followed by Catz, walking away after Catz crashed out going for the Bump (0+).

W3 started off strong, but ultimately falling to bump Homerton W2 whom they passed with their legendary overbump and a half the first day. Tomorrow they will be looking to Bump Christ’s (as they did on Day 2) and hand them spoons! They’re currently sitting at +2.

M2 followed next, set to chase down King’s M2 with the best start they’ve had so far. However, a crab before First Post Corner made it not to be, with a Bump from Caius M3. M2 is back to +0 and looking for some revenge tomorrow.

W3 started off the day, riding the wave of their almost unheard of 1.5 bump! They chased down Christ’s W3 before 1st post corner, bringing their total change to up 5 spots!

M2 followed next, set to chase down King’s M2, their foil from Mays 2015 (M2 rowed over against them Days 2 & 3 last year). After a more controlled start today, they fought off a revenge push from Clare Hall M1, and pulled within 3/4 of length, sticking with King’s until the reach but, ultimately, rowing over.

W3 started off the day. Not being deterred by a Bump and technical rowover awarded in front of them, they fought on to get a 1.5 overbump on Sidney W2, moving up 4 spots!

M2 followed next. After a scrappy start, they continued on, bearing down on Clare Hall M1 as they crashed into Grassy Corner, and being awarded an overtaking Bump!

W1 won their division and W2 came fourth in their division, both after really strong and enjoyable races!
M1 put in a strong effort to finish 2nd in their category (by 1/10th of a second!) and fifth overall on the river!
