W1 kicked off the Lent term season last weekend with Winter Head to Head, a race organised by City of Cambridge Rowing Club that involves a 2km piece raced twice: from the Railway Bridge to the A14 Motorway bridge and back. The crew started training together only 10 days earlier, after a competitive crew selection in the Lucy Cavendish / Hughes Hall combined women’s squad. They had a really strong race…and then another one, coming 5th overall, ahead of all town club women’s crews and the rest of Lent Bumps first division. The result is very encouraging considering this is only the beginning of training and the crew is already excited about their next race in Bedford on February 12th.

A Big Congratulations to the 4 men who raced in the CUBC Trial VIIIs on Monday (Henry Meek, James Letten, Ben Ruble, and Patrick Eble); Gem Schofield coxing the CUWBC Lightweights over the weekend; Myriam Goudet and Melissa Wilson in the CUWBC open weights; and Olivia Jamrog rowing for the CUWBC Lightweights, as well! And a recovery shout-out toLance Tredell to see him back in a boat soon.

Novices

Women

The novice women absolutely smashed it at Fairbairns! NW1 came 6th among the W1s and NW2 came 4th among the W2s. Unprecedented success for the club! Congratulations to all for your hard work and commitment during this term. You have now officially graduated to seniors!

Men

NM1 had an awesome race in Fairbairns with a calm and strong start. They had a solid race, with a nice rhythm of 28 for the whole race, and constant power and good technique. Although LMBC MII approached HH NM1, the steering abilities and the great calls of the Hughes cox pushed the boat away from the chasing crew. They finished strong without any crabs in the whole race. The guys had a great race and showed the potential of the men for the next term. Well done guys!

NM2 got off to a calm, strong start through the boathouses, giving their first-time racing cox an easy go around the curvy Cam. By the Chesterton footbridge, it was evident that Jesus had made a mistake in not granting extra starting space between Trinity NM4 and the stronger Hughes crew. Having to dial down the rate to not overtake before the Green Dragon and waiting eons for them to cede the racing line after the bridge, Hughes Hall NM2 walked past Trinity after briefly fighting off a killer Cam crab. By Morley’s Holt, there was nothing between them and the finish, except for an ever closer Downing boat. Pushing out of the railway bridge, the crew emptied their tank, fighting off strained forearms and another crab, to finish strong on the Reach! A first time race for 3 of the crew, and an amazing end to the novice term for the men of Hucy!!

Senior

Women

Senior Fairbairns today and the women’s squad cheekily entered two eights, possibly for the first time ever. With little time to train, everyone gave their best during the few preparatory outings and both crews came together beautifully! W1 came 6th among the college first boats, one place higher than last year! W2 came 3rd in their division. This is a huge success for the club and the squad, coming on top of the great novice results from the day before. We are very proud of everyone’s efforts and progress! We are going into Lents with amazing potential and lots to expect…Congratulations Hucy!

 

The NM1 guys did really well today in the Clare Novices Regatta! They started the first race of the day with a glorious 4 lengths win against Pembroke, looking strong and calm throughout. Then they went up against Clare and managed to hold them side by side throughout most of the race and did not let it affect them. But alas even with better technique than the other boat, Clare had a bit more power to win the 2nd race.

The NW2 girls made it all the way to the semi-final, beating both Lady Margaret and Clare.! The race in the semi-final against Queens was very close, but unfortunately Queens won by 1 length. Well done ladies!

The NM2 guys raced well, but were unfortunately beaten by Downing.

The NW1 girls put up a strong fight, but unfortunately Jesus won the race.

Our senior women’s VIII raced today in Winter Head coming 2nd in their division, 3rd Cambridge College and 5th women’s eight across all divisions, beating a lot of big Cambridge colleges, London crews and town clubs. A determined start and high rate first third brought us to overtake Pembroke at the Plough and leave them far behind at the finish. Congratulations to everyone, it was an amazing race, with really strong and technical rowing, fierce coxing and great enthusiasm! Bring on Fairbairns!

 

Congratulations to all the novice crews that participated today in the Emma Sprints!

NM1 (owls) started their first race against Christ’s at a good pace but then freaked out in the middle but still put up a good fight till the end. Second race against Emma was much calmer and smoother that gave them the win easily by more than 2 lengths! 

NM2 (elves) unfortunately had to stop midway their first race against Downing but still rowed through to the finish line despite problems in the boat. They kept it together for their second race even with a restart against Darwin and finished strong.

NW1 unfortunately had to stop halfway through the race but they picked it back up and fought all the way to the finish chasing FaT. Well done ladies for not giving up and pushing it through all the way to the end!

You are cordially invited to this term’s Boat Club Dinner, on Saturday 26th of November, which marks the last day of Clare Novices Regatta. HHLCCBC will be celebrating a great term of rowing, both for our seniors and for our unprecedentedly many novices!

Join us for pre drinks at the Lucy Bar at 6:45pm and dinner at Warburton Hall at 7:30pm. Dress code is Boat Club Black Tie.

Tickets are at £29 and include a delicious three course meal with wine and tea/coffee.

What an exciting evening for Hucy! NW2 smashed their division coming first and went home with prosecco. NW1 finished 7th overall anNM1 finished fourth in a very close final, and NW1 finished 7th overall.
