Hughesian Tom Ransley wins gold at Rio

A huge congratulations to Hughesian Tom Ransley (BA (aff), 2009, Management Studies) who won a gold medal in the men’s eight at the Rio Olympics on Saturday. This is the first time the men’s eight has won a gold medal since 2000. The British world champions led through-out the race to beat Germany who won silver and the Netherlands who won bronze. Coach Jurgen Grobler said “There are no secrets. Hard, hard, work, having vision of what is coming up and running a good training programme – and they’re still having fun.” Tom is now Hughes’ first ever gold medal winning olympian. Well done Tom!

Winningest! HHLCCBC take Michell Cup

The Hughes Hall and Lucy Cavendish College Boat Club (HHLCCBC) has won the Michell Cup which is awarded to the winningest club at Cambridge each year. The Michell Cup acknowledges the great success HHLCCBC has had on the river during the course of this academic year, having finished the year with 70.0 points, ahead of Wolfson in second place and Jesus College in third (full results here).

Also this year, for the first time in history, a boat has qualified at the Henley Royal Regatta bearing the Hughes Hall identity.

The qualifying boat consists of an amalgamation of the Clare College Boat Club and the Hughes Hall Boat Club with, specifically, the rowers being from Clare and the cox (Rosemary Ostfeld) being from Hughes Hall.

We are delighted to see the 91 Clare & Hughes Hall, Cambridge boat on the official Henley Royal Regatta website and program.

Henley is simply the biggest, most prestigious, and oldest rowing regatta in the world, so it is a great honour to be recognised in this forum. All the best to the Hughesians who are taking part in the Regatta.

Back to Back Hughesians for Boat Race President

Congratulations to Hughesian Lance Tredell who has been named as the President for the 2017 Boat Race campaign. Lance’s appointment as the next Boat Race Campaign President is particularly special as he succeeds his fellow Hughesian Henry Hoffstot.

Henry did a great job leading the Boat Race campaign and directed the crew to victory at the annual Boat Race against Oxford earlier this year. When we spoke to Lance and Henry earlier this week, Lance was delighted about the news, “It is a great honour to have been elected as President of Cambridge University Boat Club and I am proud to represent Hughes Hall in my role. After a very successful season in 2016 there is a real sense of excitement building within the club as we prepare for the start of the 2017 campaign”.

Henry commented “The CUBC is in great hands next year with Lance Tredell at the helm. Lance is mature, charismatic, and clinical in his professionalism– all attributes that will prove to be essential to the club’s success. It is also great to have another Hughesian in charge”.

We have no doubt that Lance will be a great campaign President and we are delighted to see two worthy Hughesians as back to back Boat Race Presidents.

Hughesian takes to the water in BUCS regatta

MCR President Peta Blundell along with her fellow members of the Cambridge University Women’s Boat Club (CUWBC) took to the water again, this time at the British University and College Sport (BUCS) Regatta on Sunday. The team of four, who all raced in the Lightweight Boat Race earlier this year, won the Lightweight Coxless Four and crossed the finish line in great form, seen in the photo below taken by Chris Down.

Hughes Hall Students Victorious in Boat Race!

Today’s Boat Race saw the Cambridge University Men’s Blue boat, whose crew included three Hughes Hall students, beat Oxford for the first time since 2012.

The Cambridge Women’s Blue boat, coxed by Hughes Hall’s Rosemary Ostfeld, lost out to the Oxford women after battling through difficult conditions. And Goldie, the Cambridge Men’s reserve boat, which also included three Hughes Hall members in its crew, came close to catching a strong Oxford reserve, finishing just 2 lengths behind.

The College has a distinguished tradition of rowing at all levels, and we are proud to congratulate the Hughes Hall students who took part in this year’s races: Henry Hoffstot, Ben Ruble, and Lance Tredell in the Men’s Blue boat; Rosemary Ostfeld in the Women’s Blue; and Vincent Bertram, Alister Taylor, and Joe Carroll in Goldie.

In recent years, Hughes Hall has contributed a number of outstanding rowers to the Cambridge boats. Henry Hoffstot has now crewed the Cambridge Blue boat for three years in a row (2014, 2015, and 2016) and is the current Cambridge University Boat Club President, and Ben Ruble and Rosemary Ostfeld were each making their second appearances for the Cambridge Blues in 2016.

BUMP UP THE VOLUME! Boat Club rows to triumph in Lent Bumps

The final days of this year’s Lent Bumps brought great success for the Hughes Hall Boat Club with all boats either bumping or rowing over.

W2 bumped Queens W2 on Saturday which meant they got Blades (4 bumps in 4 days) – a great achievement for the crew. W1 also had a lot to celebrate when they bumped Trinity Hall W1 to confirm their position within the 1st division, making them the first Hughes Hall or Lucy Cavendish boat to get into the first division in either Lent or May Bumps. W1 also got blades (5 bumps in 4 days) which is an outstanding achievement.

To top it all off the Hughes Hall Boat Club won the Marconi Cup, awarded to the most successful boat club during the Lent Bumps, which also acknowledged our combined movement of 14 up the bumps chart.

The boat club celebrated at the annual Boat Club Dinner at Hughes on Saturday, and as you can imagine, the atmosphere was electric after our great success at the Lent Bumps this year.

Congratulations to all the Hughes Hall and Lucy Cavendish crews.
